Hastings Middle School

An update on our schedule for tomorrow (January 23): The CERC will remain closed with daycare maintaining normal hours. We will make a determination on athletic events during the course of the day Friday.

All athletic competitions and CERC activities have been cancelled for this afternoon and evening due to weather.

The Ski and Snowboard Club trip that is scheduled for Friday, January 23 is cancelled due to extreme cold warnings. Students that have purchased transportation tickets for this trip will have that ticket money carried over for the next trip on January 30.

Bittersweet will honor Ski Club cards at the window if you wish to go on your own.

Winter got the best of us this week. School will be closed today, January 22. With tomorrow being a scheduled day off for students (staff professional development), we will see everyone on Monday.

Due to the existing winter weather advisory and forecasted poor weather and hazardous driving conditions, school will be closed on Monday, January 19.

Community Child Care will open at 8:00 a.m. and all morning programming at the CERC is cancelled. Decisions regarding athletic events will be made later in the day on Monday.

Congrats to Carter, one of our eighth graders, on qualifying for the MISCA State Meet! 🏊‍♂️ He earned his spot with a 28.20 in the 50-yard freestyle during a dual meet against Lakeview.

We want to proudly celebrate and thank our seven dedicated Board of Education members for their leadership, service, and commitment to our schools. Their time, thoughtful decision-making, and unwavering focus on what’s best for students help shape a strong future for our entire community.

Please join us in showing appreciation for their passion, perseverance, and partnership.

We’ve received some questions about whether school breakfast and lunch are free in 2026. After some initial uncertainty during the state budget talks in the fall, free meals for students did remain in place. 🍎🥪

Due to forecasted weather and poor driving conditions, our community daycare will open at 8 a.m., while the Hastings Community Education and Recreation Center (CERC) will be closed tomorrow (Dec. 29) morning. Morning athletic practices are also cancelled.

Decisions regarding afternoon athletic practices and CERC activities will be evaluated at noon tomorrow.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Jordan Mulder Agency of Farm Bureau Insurance for generously gifting our district an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Equipment like this plays a critical role in emergency preparedness and helps ensure the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and visitors. We are truly grateful!

Our students enjoyed a special pop-up movie day yesterday! Following a shortened school schedule, they signed up to watch a variety of holiday favorites, from Home Alone and The Santa Clause to Monsters, Inc. and Sing.

Along with movies, students enjoyed snacks and games as a fun way to celebrate a job well done over the past few weeks of school.

Our Innovation & Design program has been recognized by Samsung Solve for Tomorrow with a $1,000 Promising STEM Innovation Award for the 2025–26 competition!
This national recognition highlights our students’ creativity, problem-solving, and commitment to using STEM to tackle real-world challenge, standing out among submissions from all 50 states.

💡 How the funding will be used:
The award will directly support our middle school students’ Virtual Reality (VR) education, giving students more opportunities to design, build, and learn through immersive, future-ready technologies.

Thank you to Samsung for supporting student-driven STEM learning and congratulations to our students for this well-earned recognition!

Leadership, a positive attitude, sportsmanship, and strong character — these are just a few of the traits our monthly Young Citizenship Award recipients possess. We’re proud to introduce the award winners for November 2025, presented by the Hastings Kiwanis Club.

The second graders from Central Elementary hit the road to spread some Christmas cheer yesterday, and they didn’t have to travel far!

They stopped by Hastings Middle School and our administrative office to sing some holiday classics. It was such a treat to hear them. Thank you so much for stopping in and brightening our day! 🎄🎶

The Middle School basketball games vs. Harper Creek that were originally scheduled for yesterday will be held today. Same times and locations:

HOME:
- 8th grade B team (4 p.m.)
- 8th grade A team (5 p.m.)

AWAY:
- 7th grade B team (4 p.m.)
- 7th grade A team (5 p.m.)

Hastings Area School System will be CLOSED today, Wednesday, December 10, due to inclement weather. We will share updates regarding athletics and after-school activities later today.

Please note that the scheduled Grand Rapids Symphony performance at the Hastings Performing Arts Center will proceed as planned.
